Weyburn Red Wings Load Up For 2026 Sjhl Draft

The Weyburn Red Wings head into the sjhl draft with eight 2010-born picks and three 2011-born picks, a June 9, 2026 start at 1:00 p.m. that gives the club a clear chance to add to its future core. Cody Mapes said the team has accumulated picks over the last little while and feels in a pretty good spot entering the six-round 2010 portion.

Cody Mapes on Weyburn’s draft hand

Mapes said the Red Wings like the 2010 group in the province and believe their draft capital gives them their best opportunity to choose the kids they want. That matters because the club is trying to build for the future through this draft class, and its selection count gives it room to shape that group without waiting for later help.

He also pointed to the work behind the scenes. Joel Moriarty, the head scout, has done a great job over the last few years, and Mapes said the scouting staff around him has helped throughout the province. The names called on draft day will come from that work, not just from the podium.

Logan Corbett And Reg Huebner

Before the main draft, the SJHL held its auto-protect draft, which allows teams to protect two local players who are automatically added to their organization. Weyburn used that mechanism on Logan Corbett and Reg Huebner, both Weyburn-born players, keeping them in the pipeline without needing a draft pick.

Keeping local players at home has been part of the Red Wings’ approach. Mapes said those players affect the hockey team, the staff, and people around the organization long after they are gone, and he added that seeing them around town remains important to the community.

Van Heubner’s Weyburn Path

That local connection already showed up in last year’s draft, when Weyburn traded up to pick three to select Weyburn-born Van Heubner. He got some playing time with the squad during that season, giving the Red Wings a recent example of how a hometown selection can move into the lineup quickly.

Fans can follow the draft picks on the SJHL’s website and Facebook page, while hometown selections can be tracked on the Weyburn Red Wings website or their Facebook page. For a club with eight picks in the 2010-born draft and three more in the 2011-born draft, the work on June 9 is as much about keeping the local pipeline strong as it is about adding numbers to the roster.
