Rob Edwards Makes Kieran Trippier Wolves' First Summer Signing
Rob Edwards says Kieran Trippier's arrival as Wolves' first summer signing is a coup and a clear sign of what the club is trying to do. The head coach said the 54-capped England international wants to help Wolves get promoted again, with the club treating the move as a direct statement of intent.
Trippier Gives Wolves a New Standard
Edwards described Trippier as a player with leadership, character and experience that the squad has lacked over recent years. He said the right-back will be a captain for Wolves on a daily basis and on a matchday, adding that the club needed more experience, especially in England, when the chips were down.
That is why Edwards pushed so hard to make him the first signing of the summer. “When I met him, I said, ‘I want you to be our first signing’, and I think that sets out what we’re trying to do,” he said.
Newcastle Standards Follow Trippier
Before joining Wolves in the Championship, Trippier was a key figure in Newcastle United's resurgence. Edwards said he had done his homework and spoken to people at Newcastle about Trippier's leadership and daily standards, then came away convinced the move was worth pressing for.
“I’m so happy to bring him here, because when we met, it was really evident that he really wants to come to Wolves,” Edwards said. “He wants to help us get promoted again, so this is really something for us to achieve.”
He also said Trippier had other options before choosing Wolves. “He did have good options, so for us to be able to get it over the line and get him in is a real coup for us,” Edwards said.
Andre Stays as Wolves Add
Edwards also said Andre committing to Wolves was brilliant, a small but important sign that the club is not only chasing one marquee addition. The move for Trippier, though, remains the clearest marker of the summer window so far: Wolves want leadership first, and they want it early.
