Mamdani Prepares For June 16 Clash In Game 6 Nba Finals
New York officials are preparing for a possible June 16 overlap in game 6 nba finals and the World Cup, with Game 6 set for 8:30 p.m. at Madison Square Garden if the series reaches that point. The France-Senegal match begins at 3 p.m., creating a same-day squeeze for fans, transit riders and city workers.
Zohran Mamdani at MTA Rail Control Center
Zohran Mamdani said the city wants a Knicks sweep to avoid the clash. He spoke Thursday from the MTA Rail Control Center in Manhattan with Governor Kathy Hochul.
“I want to make very clear that we are hoping for a sweep,” Mamdani said. He added, “We are preparing for anything, because that is our job as New York City government, to ensure that any eventuality is one that we are ready for.”
Officials have spent the last month outlining plans and contingency plans for the 39-day World Cup tournament. They say about 100,000 people take trains and buses out to World Cup events on each match day, while New York City handles six million riders a day.
Penn Station and the Meadowlands
The overlap would put Madison Square Garden, Penn Station and the Meadowlands on the same travel clock. New Jersey Transit said only World Cup ticket holders will have access to NJ Transit’s portion of Penn Station for about four hours before and three hours after each match at MetLife Stadium.
That restriction sits alongside street closures around the city, altered bus routes in Midtown on eight match days, suspended construction and truck deliveries on match days, and gridlock alerts on each of those days. The city also said it will have 33,000 new cameras as part of its security and traffic planning.
Hochul On Match Days
Hochul said, “We can handle this. We’ve got this,” and added, “This is what we do best, and for those who are saying, ‘stay home from work’ — no. Come to the city. Celebrate. Otherwise, you’re missing the excitement and the energy.” Mamdani also said, “The city is working with partners to ensure that match goers, concert goers, Knicks fans can all move safely and securely around to celebrate that event,” a line that fits the June 13 pressure test as well, when Morocco-Brazil at MetLife would coincide with a possible Game 5 in San Antonio and a 5 Seconds of Summer concert at Madison Square Garden.
If June 16 reaches both events, the city’s plan will be judged at the exact moment two major crowds hit the same transit system. For riders heading to Penn Station or MetLife, the practical takeaway is simple: the rules around access, bus service and street movement will be tighter than on a normal game night.
