Andary says Gordie Howe Bridge opening delayed over issues

The gordie howe bridge opening has been delayed after Canada and the United States agreed to take more time to resolve outstanding issues, according to Chuck Andary of the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority. The planned launch of the Ontario-Michigan crossing had been expected by the end of the week, based on remarks from Mark Carney on Tuesday.

Chuck Andary on the delay

Andary, the authority’s interim chief executive and chief legal officer, said: "Canada and the United States have agreed to delay the opening of the bridge, taking the necessary time to resolve any outstanding issues". His statement puts the delay in procedural terms: both governments chose not to proceed until the issues are addressed.

The bridge has been described as long-delayed, and the latest postponement follows a stretch of conflicting signals. Carney said on Tuesday that "The bridge will be open at the end of the week. (It is) a symbol, but also a fact of cooperation between our countries. Great for Canadians going across the border, Americans coming across the border, and for commerce".

Trump's February position

The delay also sits alongside Donald Trump’s February statement that he would block the opening of the new bridge and trade route until the United States was "compensated for everything we have given" Canada. A White House official later told Global News on Tuesday that Trump’s position had not changed.

That leaves the opening tied to unresolved issues between the two governments rather than a fixed public launch date. For people using the crossing, the practical result is simple: the bridge is not opening on the schedule Carney described on Tuesday, and the timing now depends on when Canada and the United States finish resolving those issues.
