Ashley Fletcher Joins Huddersfield Town on Deal to Summer 2028
ashley fletcher has joined Huddersfield Town on a free transfer from Blackpool, and the deal runs until at least summer 2028. Huddersfield made him their first signing of the summer, getting the move done before the men’s first team report back for pre-season.
Huddersfield Town and Ashley Fletcher
Chris Markham said the timing was especially pleasing, while Martin Drury backed Fletcher to fit the way the team wants to play. Markham described him as “a player and a character who checks many of our boxes this summer,” and added that he arrives after “two of the most eye-catching seasons of his career to date.”
Drury said: “I’ve seen the way Ashley has impacted games over the last couple of seasons, and I’m confident that his qualities will suit how we’ll play.” He also pointed to Fletcher’s experience and the connections he can build with Huddersfield’s other attacking players.
Blackpool goals and form
Fletcher joins after a spell at Blackpool that ended with him winning the club’s player of the year award in his first season at Bloomfield Road. He later won both the fans’ and players’ player of the year awards after his best goalscoring campaign of his career.
That run followed a Championship season in 2019/20 when he scored 11 goals for Middlesbrough, one of the clearest benchmarks in his career. He also had a loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday in 2023/24 before joining Blackpool at the end of that campaign.
Evatt on Fletcher’s output
Ian Evatt said in late April that Fletcher had scored 21 goals in difficult circumstances and had carried Blackpool’s team a lot with his goals. That output is the form Huddersfield are buying into, with the striker now moving on a free transfer and landing a long deal before pre-season work begins.
Fletcher said his focus this summer was on joining the right side to make the most of his game and build on the form he has enjoyed in recent seasons. He added that after speaking to Chris and Martin “there was no doubt about signing for Town,” and said the facilities at Canalside and the stadium are “top class.”
