Midland news: police said Victor Mata Villarreal ran from a traffic stop on Anetta, drove a block over to Comanche Drive, and fired at officers around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night. He is now wanted for attempted capital murder of a peace officer.

The shooting unfolded in the 4700 block of Comanche Drive, where neighbors heard gunfire outside their homes and doorbell camera footage captured the shots. Police said Villarreal fled again after the exchange, and his car was later found nearby with no one inside.

Alejandra Ortiz said the sound hit her home first, then the police presence followed through the night. “It shook the walls of the whole house, it just felt like someone was trying to come in by force, but it was just the sound of it,” she said after hearing the gunfire outside her home.

Ortiz said she had never heard anything like it before. She added, “It was just hectic all throughout the night, all the lights from the cop cars and everything, and we didn’t have any explanations or anything.”

The traffic stop on Anetta is where the encounter began, but the chase moved a block over before shots were fired. That left officers searching for a suspect, a nearby car with no one inside, and a neighborhood that spent the night under police lights.
