Thayne Jasperson Takes Leave After Tears 2 Tendons in Hamilton

thayne jasperson will be out of Hamilton for a while after tearing his bicep tendon and rotator cuff during a performance, the 45-year-old actor wrote on Instagram on Wednesday, June 10. He said he had surgery after the injury and plans to return once he gets better.

Hamilton Since February 2015

Jasperson has been with the production since it opened in February 2015, making him the only original cast member still performing in Hamilton. That long run gives this leave a different weight than a routine cast change: one of the show’s few links to its first company is now offstage after an injury that required surgery.

He said the injury happened while he was doing a lift. In the same post, he told followers, "So bad news, I tore my bicep tendon and rotator cuff, had to get surgery, and I'll be out of Hamilton for a while," adding, "I'm so bummed. I will miss seeing y'all at the show. But…. I'll Be Back … to screeeaaam at the rabble!"

Lin-Manuel Miranda Era

Before Hamilton, Jasperson built a Broadway resume in Newsies in 2012 and Matilda The Musical in 2013. He also said last year that he stayed with the show through milestones including the Tonys, the Grammys, and the Disney+ filming, and joked about his long horizon with the production: "You're gonna be wheeling me out in a wheelchair. I'm gonna be 82, and they'll be like, 'Get off the stage!'"

That history makes his leave more than a brief pause in the cast list. For Hamilton, the immediate question is less about the show’s brand than about how long it will be without a performer who has stayed through its biggest public moments and still said, "You wrote too good of a show… I can't leave."
