Jesse Marsch Says Canada Bosnie Will Meet a Red Stadium in Toronto

Canada bosnie opens Friday in Toronto with one clear expectation from Jesse Marsch: the stadium will be red. The head coach said that before Canada’s first World Cup match at home, and the scene around Toronto on Thursday suggested the crowd already had the city in tournament mode.

Marsch Sets the Tone

Marsch made the comment at Thursday’s pre-match press conference at Toronto Stadium. He said, “Le stade sera rouge vendredi.” He also said Canada has handled hostile crowds before, including at Gold Cups and at Copa América 2024, where it finished fourth.

He tied that expectation to the group he will send into Friday’s match. “Chacun de ces garçons est remarquablement Canadien. Ils sont tellement fiers de porter ce maillot, de représenter ce pays, de chanter l’hymne national.”

Davies Out, Koné In Line

Alphonso Davies will not play on Friday. Stephen Eustáquio will wear the captain’s armband, giving Canada a different leadership look for its opening World Cup game at home.

Ismaël Koné was also part of the selection picture after missing Wednesday training because he did not feel well. Marsch said, “Il ne se sentait pas vraiment bien, et on n’allait pas en faire énormément dans cette séance de toute façon.” He added that Koné will probably start on Friday.

Toronto Already Feels It

Toronto had already shifted into tournament mode on Thursday morning. Mexican supporters were around the city before Mexico played South Africa in the opening match later that day, and Bosnian supporters were seen near the stadium before Marsch spoke.

A car decorated in blue and yellow with white stars was also spotted near the stadium, and one occupant waved a small Bosnia-Herzegovina flag in silence. For Canada, that mix of colors and support is the immediate backdrop to a first home World Cup match that starts with a red-stadium expectation and a lineup still taking shape around Davies and Koné.
