Christian Pulisic Opens Up on Alexa Melton Breakup in Time
Christian Pulisic said his breakup with alexa melton was difficult, but he spoke about her only in positive terms in a Time interview. The men's soccer star said she supported him in every way, offering a rare personal look at how the demands of elite sport spill into relationships.

Pulisic said, "I only look at her in the most positive way," and added, "She was a lot of fun, and she supported me in every way. She wanted to push me to enjoy my life a little bit more and do things with her and do things just in general. And I was grateful for that." That closes the circle on a relationship that had already ended before the interview, with the split becoming part of a broader conversation about the pressure around him.
He also said, "I have a very specific way of thinking about performance, and I’ve always wanted to be closer to the training ground, because that’s my work, and that’s what I do every single day. It’s helped me in a lot of ways. It has also made me miserable at times." For a player preparing around the 2026 World Cup, that is the trade-off: routine and proximity help his football, but they also narrow the rest of life.
Mark Pulisic
Mark Pulisic described the home side of that pressure with sharper language. "People think it’s easy to be a pro athlete, and it’s a great life," he said, before adding, "Believe me, there are tremendous benefits financially, and being in the spotlight. But when you close that door at night and you’re alone, you miss things, you miss family. You can really bring yourself down to terrible states. We just had to make sure we helped manage that."
He said Christian lives near a golf course in Milan so he has an easy recreational outlet away from soccer, and also plays online chess with pals. That mix of golf and chess reads like deliberate structure, not indulgence: ways to keep the day from collapsing into training, matches, and the kind of isolation his father described.
Kelley Pulisic
Kelley Pulisic added that the soccer obsession started early. "I think that he had a little bit of an advantage because Mark especially, not so much me, but he is a soccer coach," she said. "Christian was in love with soccer from day one." The breakup with Alexa Melton sits inside that larger family picture, where support has been built around the same career that pays well and still leaves room for loneliness.
