Konate Liverpool Exit Sets Up Free Real Madrid Move This Month
Ibrahima Konate is set to leave Liverpool for Real Madrid this month, with konate liverpool ending on a free transfer when his Anfield contract expires. The 27-year-old failed to agree a new deal and will move after five seasons in which he won the Premier League, the FA Cup and two League Cups.
Real Madrid and Alexander-Arnold
The move revives a link to Real Madrid that had been discussed earlier in the season, then seemed to fade when his form dipped. He will also be reunited there with Trent Alexander-Arnold, another former Liverpool defender now at the Spanish club.
Frank Leboeuf, speaking to BOYLE Sports, said Konate had been among the best in the world “a year and a half ago,” but added that last season he and Virgil van Dijk were “only shadows of themselves.” Leboeuf also said Konate is still “not quite there” after watching France against Ivory Coast.
Leboeuf’s warning
Leboeuf did not dress up the move as a finished product. “If Ibrahima can get back to his best, it would be fantastic for Real Madrid. He would be partnering with Dean Huijsen, that would be great. I would love to see that pairing at their best. Now, I have my doubts, so I will have to wait and see how it works,” he said.
He went further on Konate’s Liverpool exit: “He is a great player, but he needs to return to his best form. It is a good move for him after what he achieved at Liverpool.”
France Squad
Konate is in France’s squad for the World Cup in Mexico, Canada and the USA, where they open against Senegal on Tuesday in a Group I fixture at the New York New Jersey Stadium. For Liverpool, the departure closes a five-season spell built on trophies; for Madrid, it adds another defender on a free transfer and leaves Konate with the simplest pressure of all — to make the next move fit the player he once was.
