Ontario Provincial Police investigate deadly Mapleton Township crash
Multiple people were killed and several others were injured after a van and a sports utility vehicle collided in mapleton township on Friday evening. The crash happened around 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of 4th Line and Wellington Road 12, northwest of Guelph.
Ontario Provincial Police said multiple occupants from both vehicles suffered serious, life-threatening injuries. At least three people were airlifted to various trauma centres, while others were rushed to local hospitals.
4th Line and Wellington Road 12
The collision tied up a rural intersection that sits northwest of Guelph, where the OPP said it called in its Traffic Incident Management Enforcement team. Traffic is being rerouted around the area while investigators work at the scene.
The crash involved two vehicles, but it did not stay limited to a single severe injury. Police reported several fatalities and multiple serious injuries among occupants from both the van and the SUV, a mix that sent some patients by air and others by road to different hospitals.
Ontario Provincial Police response
The police response centers on the intersection and the vehicles involved, with the Traffic Incident Management Enforcement team handling the investigation. For drivers in the area, the practical effect is the rerouting already in place around 4th Line and Wellington Road 12.
That means access through the intersection remains restricted while investigators document the scene and sort out what happened in the minutes after 7:30 p.m. The immediate priority for anyone approaching that part of Mapleton Township is to follow detours and expect delays until police clear the area.
