James Trafford Draws Newcastle Back In Nufc News Move

nufc news has turned back toward James Trafford, with Newcastle United renewing their interest in the Manchester City goalkeeper after he made just 17 appearances last season. The 23-year-old is again a target after Newcastle previously tried to land him before his move from Burnley, and the timing matters because their goalkeeping unit is still being reshaped.

Trafford Returns To Newcastle’s Radar

Newcastle have made fresh contact with Manchester City and told them they want to recruit Trafford again. The two sides have not yet opened formal negotiations, but the renewed push puts the England international back at the center of Newcastle’s search for another goalkeeper.

Trafford, who came through Manchester City’s youth academy, had already been on Newcastle’s list last summer before he joined City from Burnley. He spent the summer of 2023 on the move after joining Burnley on a permanent deal when the club returned to the Premier League.

Manchester City And Burnley Path

His route has included loan spells at Accrington Stanley and Bolton Wanderers, then a productive run at Burnley that produced 73 appearances across two seasons. At City last season, that role shrank sharply to 17 appearances, and in February he said the situation was not what he had expected.

“It (being No. 2) wasn’t what I expected,” Trafford said in February. “I tried to guard against the situation happening, but it’s the reality.” He added: “I know every time I play, I’ve got to give it my best shot and try to win and try to improve.” “That’s the current situation I’m in.”

Nick Pope’s Newcastle Spot

Newcastle’s interest sits alongside a wider goalkeeping reshuffle. Aaron Ramsdale’s loan has ended, Ewen Jaouen, the 20-year-old, has been secured from Reims, and Nick Pope could depart if another senior addition arrives.

Trafford is also waiting until after the World Cup to decide his future. That leaves Newcastle with a live target, City with a goalkeeper who wants clarity, and Pope’s place depending on whether the club pushes through another senior signing.
