Michael Chandler Targets Mauricio Ruffy at UFC Freedom 250

Michael Chandler is set to fight mauricio ruffy this weekend at UFC Freedom 250 on the White House lawn, a card tied to America’s 250th birthday. The 40-year-old said the setting is the biggest platform mixed martial artists could ask for.

Chandler and the White House lawn

Chandler framed the event as more than a standard fight night. “This is the biggest platform we could have asked for as mixed martial artists: on the White House (lawn), on America’s 250th birthday,” he said.

He also called it “a love letter to this country. It’s a love letter to the fans.” That places his bout with Ruffy in a spot few fighters ever get: a UFC card staged on the White House lawn and tied to a national milestone.

From Bellator to UFC 257

For more than a decade, Chandler competed outside the UFC as a top mixed martial artist in Bellator before coming over at the close of 2020. He said he spent many years outside the UFC and wanted badly to be there, even at times wondering whether the door would ever open.

His move quickly paid off. At UFC 257 in Abu Dhabi, he met Dan Hooker in the co-main event and knocked him out in under half a round after a left hand sent Hooker to the canvas. Chandler said he told Hunter Campbell he wanted the toughest opponents right away, putting his debut run on a fast track.

Ruffy Awaits This Weekend

That approach has defined his UFC stretch since then, with Chandler saying he has delivered Fight of the Night, Fight of the Year, Debut of the Year and Knockout of the Year performances. The matchup with Mauricio Ruffy gives him another chance to add to that run in front of the most unusual stage of his career.

The fight is scheduled for this weekend at UFC Freedom 250, presented by Crypto.com and RAM. Chandler has already made his case for the setting, and the next result comes inside the cage, with Ruffy standing between him and another high-profile moment on a card built around America’s 250th birthday.
