Trudeau World Cup Criticism: Trudeau Defends Skip With 1-1 Draw in Toronto
Justin Trudeau pushed back after trudeau world cup criticism over skipping Canada’s World Cup opener in Toronto and appearing at the U.S. match in Los Angeles with Katy Perry. He said on Saturday night that “supportive boyfriend duties call,” then added, “Sometimes supportive boyfriend duties call. But you know who I’m rooting for to take the Cup ??”.
Trudeau and Perry in Los Angeles
Trudeau was spotted with Perry at the World Cup game in Los Angeles and attended the U.S. team’s match against Paraguay on Friday at SoFi Stadium. Perry performed at the World Cup opening ceremony in Los Angeles the same day and wore pins of both the U.S. and Canada flags on her dress.
Canada’s 1-1 Toronto draw
The criticism came because he skipped Team Canada’s first home World Cup match in Toronto, where Canada played Bosnia-Herzegovina and finished in a 1-1 draw. The timing made the public reaction sharper: the World Cup kicked off Thursday and runs through July 19, with Canada’s opener carrying more attention than a routine early match.
Previous public appearances
Trudeau and Perry were first spotted in France last year while leaving a cabaret show at the Crazy Horse Paris, and they were most recently seen together at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City. Perry also called Trudeau “the love of (her) life” during a Q&A session after the premiere of her concert film, “Katy Perry: The Lifetimes Tour.”
For Canadians who expected to see their former prime minister at the country’s first home World Cup match, the issue was not the stadium seat itself but the choice attached to it. Trudeau answered that choice directly, and his own post left no doubt where he says his support is headed: “you know who I’m rooting for to take the Cup ??”.
