Monterrey Mexico last hosted a World Cup game on June 21, 1986, and Francisco Javier 'El Abuelo' Cruz still remembers the night as a blur of joy and noise. He was 19 years old, on the bench at Estadio Universitario, and says he did not fully understand what he was living. Cruz said the match felt bigger than the moment he could process. “Lo recuerdo como una gran fiesta, un evento mágico, único. No tenía idea de la realidad sobre lo que estábamos pasando. Posiblemente por la juventud no dimensionaba todo lo que estaba viviendo en mi entorno. Me pasaron muy rápido esos momentos de felicidad. Fue como un esbozo de un gran encuentro con la gente, pero sí, a la distancia hay mucha nostalgia. Aparte de que hicimos historia, estábamos a un eslabón de pasar a semifinales. Yo recuerdo mucho esa efervescencia que había con la gente, esa comunión”
That memory comes from the Mexico-Germany match at Estadio Universitario on June 21, 1986, the last time Monterrey hosted a World Cup game before the tournament returned to the city. He also described the way he fit into the team under Bora Milutinovic. “A mí me enseñaron a divertirme. Entonces, la gente empezó a ver que yo podía ser un revulsivo para mis compañeros cuando se sintieran cansados. Hubo mucha conexión con la afición. Había mucha empatía con la gente. Cada jugador estaba identificado con la selección porque todos le metíamos corazón a las cosas, había muchos líderes desde la portería hasta el último delantero.”
At the stadium, the crowd even turned his nickname into a chant: “Sacaremos al ‘Abuelo’ de la banca”. Cruz said the connection with supporters felt organic, and he tied that bond to the mood around the tournament in Monterrey. He added, “No es presunción, pero no estaba ubicada en la realidad. Sentía que para mí era un juego y tal vez por eso hubo esa conexión, porque era muy orgánico toda la conexión con la gente. Tal vez si lo pienso como profesional me hubiese dado miedo al entrar en contacto con el juego, es decir, lo recuerdo como una magia y una conexión con la afición, una una bendición que la gente sintiera que yo pudiera ser un revulsivo para la selección”
