Michael Chandler Set for Mauricio Ruffy at UFC Freedom 250

Michael Chandler is set to face Mauricio Ruffy on the White House lawn at UFC Freedom 250, and he called the booking the biggest platform mixed martial artists could ask for. The 40-year-old said the setting on America’s 250th birthday turns the fight into something bigger than a regular card.

Chandler’s White House stage

“This is the biggest platform we could have asked for as mixed martial artists: on the White House (lawn), on America’s 250th birthday,” Chandler said. “It’s a love letter to this country.” He added, “It’s a love letter to the fans.”

The matchup gives Chandler another chance to fight in a spotlight that has defined much of his UFC run since he joined the organization at the end of 2020. He spent more than a decade outside the UFC before that move, and he has tried to keep every booking pointed at the strongest opposition available.

Chandler’s UFC entry

When he first spoke with Hunter Campbell, Chandler said he wanted the toughest names right away. “Hunter, I wanna be good for your organization. I wanna fight the toughest guys right away. Throw me into the shark-infested waters. Either I am who I say I am or I’m not. I’m not here for a long time, I’m here for a good time,” he said.

That approach matched the way he presented himself once he arrived. “I spent so many years outside of the UFC and truly wanting to be in the UFC really, really bad, (but) at other times thinking, ‘Maybe that’s not for me. Maybe the door will never open,’” Chandler said. “It needed to be abundantly clear that I was going to come over to the UFC at the right time, and at the end of 2020, it just felt like the right time. Since then, the UFC has been good on their word, and I’ve been good on my word.”

Dan Hooker finish in Abu Dhabi

His first big statement in the UFC came at UFC 257 in Abu Dhabi, where he faced Dan Hooker in the co-main event. Chandler stalked Hooker for nearly two minutes before landing a left hand, then followed with rapid-fire shots until Marc Goddard stopped the fight.

He later pointed to the string of awards that followed. “Fight of the Night after Fight of the Night. Fight of the Year after Fight of the Year. Debut of the Year. Knockout of the Year,” Chandler said. “I’ve came through with my end of the bargain. I put butts in seats, I put people on the edge of their seats, I make’em feel something, and the UFC has given me an amazing platform to showcase my skills and it’s a great symbiotic relationship.”

That history is part of why the White House lawn booking stands out: Chandler has been built for big stages since the moment he entered the UFC, and Mauricio Ruffy now draws the assignment on one of the sport’s most unusual settings. The fight places Chandler back in a spotlight he says fits the scale of the moment, and it gives the card a headliner whose career has been defined by high-risk, high-visibility matchups.
