Mostafa Shobeir Poised to Extend Egypt’s World Cup Goalkeeping Line

Mostafa Shobeir is poised to become Egypt’s first-choice goalkeeper at the 2026 World Cup, putting the youngest son of Ahmed Shobeir on the same stage his father reached in 1990. He has moved into position after breaking into Egypt’s set-up and now stands as the leading candidate to guard the net in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Ahmed Shobeir’s World Cup line

Ahmed Shobeir represented Egypt at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, ending a 56-year absence from football’s biggest tournament. He first appeared for Egypt in a friendly against Norway on 17 December 1984, then became the national team’s first-choice goalkeeper after serving as an understudy to the late Thabet El-Batal in an Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad.

That path now has a direct family echo. Ahmed later said, “I had the honors of helping Egypt qualify for the 1990 World Cup and I am very proud to see my son achieve the same thing” and “I cannot describe my feelings seeing my son in this position. As a father, I am very proud.”

Mostafa Shobeir at Ahly

Mostafa Shobeir was promoted to Ahly’s senior squad in 2020 and worked his way into view from there. His first official appearance came in an Egypt Cup last-16 match against Tersana, and he then produced an assured display in Ahly’s 2-1 victory over Wydad Casablanca in the first leg of the 2023 African Champions League final in Cairo.

His opening at senior level widened after Mohamed El-Shenawy suffered an injury in that final. Jess Thorup eventually gave him the starting role during the decisive phase of the domestic league campaign, and the goalkeeper kept building on that chance.

Egypt’s 2024 qualifier path

Shobeir earned his first cap for Egypt against Botswana on 19 November 2024 in the final round of Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. He also featured in Egypt’s World Cup qualifying win over Djibouti, part of a campaign that ended with qualification secured and one game remaining after a 3-0 victory over Djibouti.

That leaves Hossam Hassan with a clear selection decision heading toward 2026. If Shobeir gets the nod, Egypt will carry a goalkeeper whose father stood in the same role at the 1990 World Cup, and the family line will stretch from Italy to North America without another detour.
