Muslera Uruguay Pushes FIFA to Recognize Five-World-Cup Legend

muslera uruguay is now tied to a formal request from the Uruguayan Football Association for FIFA to recognize Fernando Muslera as a legend after his fifth World Cup appearance. The ask lands before Uruguay opens Group H in 2026, with Muslera set apart as the first and only Uruguayan footballer to reach five World Cups.

Ignacio Alonso said the request follows FIFA's rule that a player must reach five World Cup editions to qualify for legend status and wear a special patch on the shirt.

Alonso on Muslera

Alonso went further on Muslera's place in the tournament record book. "Muslera es uno de los jugadores que la historia de los Mundiales tocó con la varita mágica al estar en cinco competiciones, por lo tanto ni que hablar que es una leyenda, y merece la consideración como tal," he said.

The numbers behind the request are clear. Muslera was in Uruguay's squads for South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, Russia 2018, Qatar 2022 and the 2026 edition jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada. He did not play any minutes in South Africa 2010, but the appearance count still put him into the five-tournament group that FIFA recognizes with the special patch.

Uruguay's World Cup record

Muslera's five appearances put him ahead of a long list of Uruguay greats who stopped at four. Pedro Virgilio Rocha, Diego Godín, Martín Cáceres, Edinson Cavani and Luis Suárez each finished with four World Cup appearances, while Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Guillermo Ochoa are in the six-World-Cup group.

That leaves Uruguay with a rare distinction before the 2026 tournament starts: its goalkeeper stands alone in national history at five World Cups. The federation's push asks FIFA to treat that mark as more than a statistic and place Muslera in the legend group that already includes Antonio Carbajal, Andrés Guardado, Rafael Márquez, Lothar Matthaus, Manuel Neuer, Gianluigi Buffon, Luka Modrić and Yuto Nagatomo.

Group H for Uruguay

Uruguay was drawn into Group H with Saudi Arabia, Cape Verde and Spain, and the schedule begins Monday, June 15, 2026, against Saudi Arabia at Miami Stadium. The group continues Sunday, June 21, 2026, against Cape Verde at Miami Stadium, then closes Friday, June 26, 2026, against Spain at Estadio Guadalajara in Mexico.

For Muslera, the request gives his fifth World Cup a different kind of weight before a ball is kicked. Uruguay has already put his case in front of FIFA, and the tournament schedule now puts his place in that small five-World-Cup class on the same stage as the rest of Group H.
