Tottenham Track Maxi Araujo With £69 Million Clause in Play
Tottenham are showing a keen interest in maxi araujo, and Sporting CP want close to his £69 million release clause before they open exit talks. The 26-year-old could move into a summer battle that also includes Manchester United and Chelsea.
Sporting CP and the clause
Araujo is under contract until 2029, which gives Sporting room to hold their line. The club are weighing his future after the World Cup, when he is set to play for Uruguay in group games against Spain, Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde.
That timing matters for Tottenham because the left side of their squad is already crowded. Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi have arrived, and Roberto De Zerbi is also making progress on deals for Savinho and Jan Paul van Hecke.
Tottenham left-back options
There is no shortage of cover on that side already. Tottenham have Destiny Udogie, Ben Davies, Djed Spence and Souza as left-back options or cover, and Souza only arrived in January.
Araujo’s value is not limited to one role. He can play at left-back and left-wing, which is part of why Atletico Madrid have also been monitoring a possible deal.
Uruguay at the World Cup
For Sporting, the next major checkpoint comes with Uruguay’s group games rather than a transfer deadline. Araujo’s performances against Spain, Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde will sit in the middle of any decision on whether Sporting push for the full clause value or soften their stance later.
Tottenham’s interest now sits in the same lane as multiple other clubs, and the price is already set near the top of the market. If Sporting stay close to that £69 million figure, any move for Araujo will require a club willing to pay for both his age and his flexibility.
