The closure covers the westbound carriageway from junction eight for Warrington West to junction seven for Rainhill. National Highways put a full diversion route in place and told road users to follow the hollow square diversion symbol shown on local road signs.
National Highways Traffic Officers were helping with traffic management while emergency services stayed at the scene. Merseyside Police shared an update at around 5am after leading the response to the collision, which National Highways said occurred at 04:18am and involved a vehicle that left the carriageway.
Junction nine for Winwick
Delays built on the approach to the closure, and congestion on the westbound side reached junction nine for Winwick. Traffic was also heavy on the M62 eastbound near the crash because of onlookers.
For drivers already on the route, the diversion is the only stated alternative in place while the closure remains active. National Highways said emergency services remained focused on the initial response, leaving no set reopening time for the westbound carriageway.
