Claire Sweeney films final Coronation Street scenes before Annie role

Claire Sweeney has filmed her final Coronation Street scenes, ending her current run as Cassie Plummer before moving into the UK tour of Annie as Miss Hannigan. She announced the exit in January, and last week said the final scenes were already in the can.

Miss Hannigan and Coronation Street

Sweeney is leaving the soap to return to musical theatre, and she has described Miss Hannigan as her dream role. That puts the exit on a clear professional track rather than a loose pause, with the stage part now taking priority after her television run.

If the stars aligned, I’d definitely come back. Why wouldn’t I? Miss Hannigan is my dream role, but I’ve absolutely loved being at Coronation Street too!

Cassie Plummer’s exit story

Cassie’s departure is being written around Ross arriving and turning her son’s head, with Sweeney saying the story has been promised to be explosive. She said, “She’d finally got the stability and the family life she’d been craving. And Ross comes in and he totally turns her son’s head.”

That lands against Cassie’s recent history on the soap: she arrived while in the grips of a drug addiction, overdosed and was in a critical state before Evelyn Plummer got her into rehab, then later rented a flat with Evelyn at the precinct. She also told Tyrone Dobbs that she was his mum, laced Ken Barlow’s tea with antihistamines while stealing from him, and later slept rough after Tyrone kicked her out.

Ross and the fallout

Ross is Tyrone’s dad, and Sweeney said Cassie knows exactly what kind of trouble he brings. “She knows what he’s about. He’s dangerous, but people don’t see it, because he’s very good at covering it up.”

She also said, “It took her long enough to be accepted. She knows that Ross is a wrong ‘un and she knows the impact he will have, not only on her and her security, but also on everyone around her.” That is the real pressure point in the storyline: Cassie has only just found something close to stability, and the exit setup puts that fragile fix straight back under strain.

Sweeney has already left the door open for a return, but the immediate business is the swap from soap schedule to stage work. For viewers, the next move is not whether Cassie disappears quietly; it is how hard the show chooses to push the fallout before she goes.
