Mason Greenwood Reaches Agreement in Principle With Roma for 2031

Mason greenwood has reached an agreement in principle with AS Roma on a contract through 2031, and Roma are preparing to open talks with Marseille. The move would put Manchester United's 50% sell-on clause back in play and could deliver at least £20m to the club.

Roma Move Takes Shape

Nicolo Schira said Roma are ready to speak with Marseille to try to sign the winger, with Greenwood described as Gasperini's main target for the summer transfer window. The agreement in principle includes a deal worth €5M a year plus bonuses.

Greenwood joined Marseille in 2024 after Manchester United offloaded him, and his output there has been substantial: 48 goals and 17 assists in 81 appearances over the past two seasons. That record gives Roma a clear reason to push quickly if they want to turn the agreement with the player into a completed transfer.

Manchester United Sell-On Clause

The financial side is unusually direct. United kept a 50% sell-on clause when Greenwood left for Marseille, so a move to Roma would send money back to Old Trafford rather than just changing the player's address.

INEOS are expected to recoup at least £20m from the transfer. That figure sits alongside the earlier report that Manchester United will save more than nine million pounds for Ruben Amorim, with the money now going to AC Milan after it had been destined for the Portuguese manager.

Greenwood's path back into the transfer market has also carried off-field weight. He faced charges relating to attempted rape and assault before the Crown Prosecution Service discontinued the case after key witnesses withdrew, and clubs have continued to treat any deal for him as both a football and business decision.
