Idrissa Gueye Faces Everton Decision Before June Expiry

Everton are weighing whether to give idrissa gueye a new contract before his current terms expire at the end of June. The 36-year-old midfielder has played 236 times for the club across two spells, and any fresh deal is expected to come on reduced terms.

Gueye’s Everton record

Gueye has been a useful presence for Everton in numbers as well as minutes. He has scored 10 goals and supplied 11 assists, and his career at the club includes a three-year stint at PSG between his two spells on Merseyside.

Last summer, he signed a one-year contract, leaving Everton with a short runway on a player whose next move now sits inside the club’s broader squad planning. Another year’s extension was potentially on the table, but the terms are not being treated as automatic.

Tim Iroegbunam comparison

The debate has sharpened because the midfield picture is changing. Tim Iroegbunam made 68 tackles in 615 fewer Premier League minutes than Gueye, while Merlin Röhl is due to become another central option after a loan spell if Everton trigger the obligation to purchase him.

That puts the decision in plain terms: Everton are not just judging experience. They are also measuring whether Gueye still fits the middle of the pitch as the club adds younger options around him.

Reduced terms at Everton

The statistical drop is hard to ignore. Gueye ranked in the top three Premier League players for tackles won in five of his first six seasons, but last season he was 102nd in the league for tackles won and eighth among Everton players.

His tackles per game average fell from 3.9 in 2024-25 to 2.1 per 90 last season. Gueye is reported to earn £120,000 per week, which helps explain why any extension would likely be on lower wages than his current deal.

Everton now have to decide whether that experience still outweighs the decline in defensive output before June runs out. The club’s choice will shape whether Gueye stays as part of a midfield reshuffle or reaches free agency at the end of the month.
