Rayan Cherki fits Leboeuf's Barcelona XI with Lamine Yamal
Frank Leboeuf sees rayan cherki in a Barcelona attack built around Lamine Yamal, and he called the idea “insane.” Cherki is 22 and is starring for Manchester City now, but the former France international said a future switch to La Liga cannot be ruled out.
Leboeuf said that if Barcelona put Cherki on top of Yamal, Raphinha, maybe a striker, and behind Frenkie de Jong and Pedri, “that's insane. That's absolutely insane.” He also pointed to Barcelona's financial problems while still naming the club's pull for marquee players.
Leboeuf on Camp Nou
“Yeah. But Barcelona has some financial problems. It’s insane. They promise stuff and you see names. You say, ‘how come they could have gotten [Robert] Lewandowski and so many others?’ And you say, ‘I thought they didn't have money’. If you don't have money, I don't have money, we cannot buy anything. But they can. So good for them,” Leboeuf said.
He tied that to the kind of attacking group Barcelona can still imagine building, one that would place Cherki in the middle as a number 10. In his words, that setup would give the team a cluster of creators rather than a single focal point.
Manchester City and Cherki
Cherki is currently with Manchester City, where he has made headlines in England with rabona assists and cup final keepy-uppies. He helped City win the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup during Pep Guardiola's final season, and he remains tied to a contract with four years left to run.
That contract does not close the door on movement forever. A future switch to La Liga cannot be ruled out, and Leboeuf's comments put Barcelona squarely in the frame because he sees Cherki and Yamal as the sort of pairing that would fit the club's history of creative attackers.
Barcelona's attacking lineage
Barcelona have previously featured Diego Maradona, Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi, and Leboeuf used that lineage to sketch the kind of stage Cherki would join. The club's mix of financial difficulty and ambition has already produced major moves before, including Lewandowski, and Leboeuf also noted that England international Anthony Gordon was added to Barcelona's ranks in the summer of 2026.
For Cherki, the present remains Manchester City and the future remains open. Guardiola is calling time on his 10-year reign, and Cherki will be back under a new manager while still under contract, which keeps any Barcelona talk at the level of possibility rather than a finished deal.
