Environment Canada Issues Tornado Warning for Medicine Hat Weather

Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a tornado warning on Tuesday afternoon as medicine hat weather turned severe across parts of southern Alberta and Saskatchewan. The warning covered Cypress County near Seven Persons, Bowell and Redcliff, Suffield and Highway 879, along with the County of Newell near Tilley and Rolling Hills.

The warning also included the R.M. of Battle River, Sweet Grass Res., Delmas and The Battlefords. Environment and Climate Change Canada said the situation was dangerous and potentially life-threatening, and told people to take cover immediately if threatening weather approached.

Southern Alberta Warning Areas

Severe storms were possible on Tuesday in places such as Calgary and Red Deer, with damaging winds and hail possible in some locations. Power outages were also possible. The main hazards included large hail of 2 to 4 centimetres, strong winds of up to 90+ km/h and heavy downpours.

Hail up to 4 centimetres in size was possible in the strongest storms. Hail and wind-producing storms were forecast to track from central Alberta toward southwestern Saskatchewan throughout Tuesday afternoon and evening.

Medicine Hat And Nearby Communities

Cities facing the potential for severe thunderstorms included Calgary, Red Deer, Medicine Hat, Saskatoon and Regina. The warning placed Medicine Hat weather inside a broader storm corridor stretching across the Prairies, with the same system capable of producing hail and damaging wind as it moved east.

The source said the upper-level pattern featured a strong jet stream nosing across the province off the Pacific Ocean. That setup supported a multi-day thunderstorm risk in Alberta and Saskatchewan during the week.

Tuesday Afternoon Forecast

The immediate concern on Tuesday afternoon was the storm track from central Alberta toward southwestern Saskatchewan. Readers in the warning areas were told to move to cover right away if threatening weather approached, while other Prairie communities remained under a severe thunderstorm risk for the rest of the day and evening.
