Thelo Aasgaard Says Rangers First Season Wasn't Ideal

Thelo Aasgaard said his first season at Rangers “wasn’t ideal” after a difficult campaign that brought criticism and a surprise place in Norway’s World Cup squad. The 24-year-old midfielder ended the season with 48 appearances, eight goals and five assists, but his own view of the year was far less polished than the numbers.

Rangers Form And Criticism

“People can say what they want. It wasn’t an ideal season at Rangers, but I’m here for a reason,” he said. That line cuts straight through the noise around a player who moved to Ibrox from Luton Town last summer and spent much of the year under scrutiny.

“It has been difficult when the criticism has poured in, but I have also learned a lot from it and I am proud of how I have handled it,” Aasgaard said. Rangers finished third, and his own totals show the split in the story: enough production to stay in the picture, but not enough to make the season feel settled on his terms.

Norway Squad Spot

The Norway selection adds the sharpest contrast. Aasgaard debuted for the senior side last March and has scored five goals in eight caps, so the international form has stayed ahead of the club narrative.

“When I wasn’t in the squad in March it was a tough message, but I had two months to prove what I’m good at,” he said. He was left out of the March friendlies, then included in Norway’s World Cup squad after that window, turning a setback into a direct route back into the national setup.

Ibrox Pressure

His first season at Ibrox now reads as a test of response more than a clean breakthrough. Aasgaard arrived after starring for Wigan Athletic, but the challenge at Rangers was immediate and the criticism never stayed far away.

That is the friction point in his season: a player can post eight goals and five assists, reach a World Cup squad and still describe the year as one that did not go to plan. For Rangers, the numbers are on the board; for Aasgaard, the next step is turning that output into a season he does not have to qualify after the fact.
