Mbappé passes Just Fontaine as France beats Senegal 3-1
Just Fontaine is now the name Kylian Mbappé passed on the way to France’s scoring summit. On Tuesday, Mbappé scored twice in a 3-1 World Cup win over Senegal and became France’s record goalscorer.
The 2-goal night gave France its first group-stage win and pushed Mbappé beyond Fontaine’s mark for the national team. He was blunt about the response to critics: “Il n'y a pas de revanche. Si je commence à jouer pour tous les gens qui me critiquent et les faire taire, je devrais jouer jusqu'à 80 ans.”
Mbappé and France's 3-1 start
France beat Senegal 3-1 on Tuesday in a match Mbappé described as the kind that can settle a team early in a tournament. “Je ne pense pas qu'on soit totalement lancés, mais c'est toujours important de bien commencer les compétitions, ça donne un peu plus de tranquillité, même si on n'est jamais tranquilles dans une Coupe du monde.”
He added that the game was not a simple one even with the score line, saying: “Aujourd'hui (mardi), ce n'était pas un match évident, mais on sait qu'à tout moment, on peut marquer et faire la différence donc ça aide.”
Just Fontaine and the record
Mbappé’s two goals did more than open the scoring race for France in this World Cup. They moved him past Just Fontaine in the national team ledger, a record that usually takes years to build and almost never changes inside a tournament match.
He framed the record as part of a larger target, not a personal argument. “Je joue pour marquer l'histoire de mon pays et faire en sorte que mon équipe soit en finale et gagne la Coupe du monde.”
Six days to Iraq
Mbappé also cut against any victory-lap talk. “Ce n'est qu'un premier match de poule.”
That is the useful read for France now: the record belongs to Mbappé, but the bracket does not. “Tout va très vite dans une Coupe du monde, on a déjà le match contre l'Irak dans six jours où on doit gagner pour se qualifier.”
