Courtney Getz arrested in Arlington in March crash that killed 6-year-old

Courtney Getz was arrested in arlington on Tuesday and charged in the March 25 crash that killed her 6-year-old daughter. Police said she now faces intoxication manslaughter and one count of possession of a controlled substance after the wreck on westbound Interstate 20 near the U.S. 287 interchange.

March 25 crash on Interstate 20

Investigators said Getz was driving a 2014 Nissan Sentra with two children in the backseat when she became distracted by something behind her and took her eyes off the road. The car struck the back of a dump truck at 12:29 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Interstate 20 near the U.S. 287 interchange.

Aviah Getz, 6, was later pronounced dead. Getz and the second child suffered non-life-threatening injuries, while the dump truck driver was not hurt.

THC evidence in the vehicle

Officers recovered THC vape pens during a search of the car after the crash. Investigators later got a search warrant for Getz’s blood after receiving information that she may have used the substance before driving.

Toxicologists with the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the level of THC in her blood was consistent with use within four to six hours of the draw. Experts advised investigators that she was likely impaired and should not have been operating a vehicle at the time of the collision.

Arlington jail and bond

Getz was taken into custody without incident in Arlington by members of the U.S. Marshals North Texas Fugitive Task Force. She was initially booked into the Arlington City Jail and later transferred to the Tarrant County Jail.

A bond has not been set, leaving her in custody as the criminal case moves forward on charges tied to the fatal crash and the drug evidence collected afterward.
