Ange Postecoglou Dismisses Roy Keane Jibe With McGinn Praise
roy keane’s “pub player” jibe at John McGinn did not hold up long once Ange Postecoglou spoke about the Aston Villa captain. Postecoglou rated McGinn highly, praised how hard he is to plan against, and pointed to the impact he makes when Villa are missing him.
Postecoglou on McGinn
“On the touchline, when you are coaching, you appreciate just what an effective footballer he is,” Postecoglou said. “He uses his body so well to turn you. You can give information to players, and they are trying to execute, but he does what he does so well and consistently.”
He then pushed the point further. “From pub to elite? I rate him really highly. When he was missing from the Villa team, there was a bit missing in their line-up. Unai Emery rates him very highly.”
Keane’s “pub player” line
Keane’s comment came last week, when he said that when the 31-year-old goes through a dip in form, he “looks like a pub player.” The line drew widespread debate and anger among Villa supporters, and it landed on a player who captains the club and has become one of its central figures.
McGinn led Aston Villa to their first major trophy in 30 years last season and helped them finish inside the top four in the Premier League. That run came with McGinn in a role that has changed under Unai Emery, moving from a tireless box-to-box runner into a tactical hybrid.
Aston Villa’s McGinn role
Villa now often use him on the right side of a midfield four or push him higher to help unlock low blocks. The club’s collective intensity also drops when he is absent, which is why the criticism cut against a player whose influence is tied to more than goals or assists alone.
Postecoglou’s response did more than defend McGinn. It backed the idea that Villa’s structure is built around a midfielder who can turn pressure into control, and it left Keane’s comment looking detached from how Emery uses him now.
