Jarell Quansah Left Out as Carragher Questions Tuchel's England Call
jarell quansah was left out of England's squad again this week as Thomas Tuchel continued his build-up to the World Cup across North America this summer. Jamie Carragher said he was not surprised by the decision and argued Tuchel is leaning toward squad harmony rather than pure quality.
Tuchel and Alexander-Arnold
Carragher said Tuchel is picking “team harmony, togetherness and spirit over quality and talent.” He added, “I think this is another decision that just proves that.”
He also pointed to the way Tuchel is shaping the squad, saying some selections suggest the head coach prefers players who can fill in at right-back rather than specialists in that role. Carragher said, “We know Thomas Tuchel’s stance regarding Trent. When you look at some of the players in the squad it looks as though he’s picking centre-backs who can do a job at right-back rather than out and out right-backs.”
Trent's long absence
Alexander-Arnold last played for England 12 months ago, when he came on as a substitute in a 1-0 win over Andorra in World Cup qualifying. He is now 27, and the omission comes while he is at Real Madrid after leaving Liverpool.
Carragher said Tuchel may also be weighing what Alexander-Arnold brings against what he does not. “We know there’s the special qualities that Alexander-Arnold has. That’s why Real Madrid wanted him,” he said. “The reason why Liverpool supporters were so upset to lose him. The qualities Trent has, and maybe the deficiencies is maybe why Tuchel hasn’t picked him.”
Livramento and Chalobah
The squad changed again on Tuesday when Tino Livramento withdrew because of a calf injury and Trevoh Chalobah was selected in his place. Harry Maguire said that sort of change can tilt a call-up toward a low-profile option, saying a squad addition should come “with a minimum of fuss, no real media attention or disruption to the camp.”
Maguire said he did not think Alexander-Arnold would have been called up even when a player dropped out, because the discussion around him would dominate the camp. “So I do believe when someone did get injured, I don't think Trent would've ever been called up because the questions and everything will be about him,” he said. “If he called me up, it (the questions) would be about me,”
