Tottenham Target Tonali in Summer Move — Who Won The Football
Tottenham want to sign Sandro Tonali this summer, and who won the football is already the wrong question for Newcastle: the real issue is whether they can resist a sale if the price climbs high enough. The Newcastle midfielder is a top target for Roberto De Zerbi as Spurs rebuild after avoiding relegation from the Premier League.
Tonali and Tottenham
Mark McAdam described the move as “This is a real statement of intent from Tottenham Hotspur.” Tottenham have been told to expect a busy run of windows, starting with this summer, and the club are backing De Zerbi as he shapes the squad.
De Zerbi was also described as the most hands-on head coach Spurs have had for some time, with the message from inside the club that he wants big signings. Tonali sits at the center of that plan, and Tottenham are also looking at Jan Paul van Hecke at Brighton and Savinho at Manchester City as part of a wider reset.
Newcastle's price on Tonali
Newcastle would only consider selling for a huge fee. Tonali signed his current deal in 2024 while serving a 10-month gambling ban, and the contract runs until 2029 without a release clause.
McAdam said Newcastle would probably want around the £80m mark, maybe even more, while Michael Bridge called it a “blockbuster deal.” Bridge added that Newcastle do not want to sell their prized asset and that any exit would require a seismic offer.
Arsenal and Manchester City
Tottenham are not alone. Manchester City have kept an eye on Tonali over the last few months, and Arsenal are also big fans. Bridge said there are a number of suitors in the Premier League and in Europe, but very few clubs can reach the financial level Newcastle would like.
That puts Spurs in a difficult but clear position: if they want Tonali, they have to move into a market where Newcastle are asking for near-elite money for a player under contract until 2029. The competition for him is already wide enough to turn this into one of the summer’s biggest tests of Tottenham’s new direction.
