Tyler Heineman Blue Jays traded to Angels for cash considerations

The tyler heineman blue jays move ended with the Angels acquiring the 34-year-old catcher for cash considerations after Toronto designated him for assignment over the weekend. The swap gives Los Angeles another backstop as it works through a thin catching group and forces Toronto to move on after Heineman spent the past year and a half in the organization.

Angels add Heineman

Heineman’s arrival comes after the Angels had been using a Logan O'Hoppe and Logan Porter catching tandem for the past week. Travis d'Arnaud has been out with plantar fasciitis, and Sebastián Rivero underwent hamate surgery, leaving the club to reach deeper into the depth chart than it wanted.

To make room, the Angels designated Trey Mancini for assignment this afternoon. They will still need to open an active roster spot once Heineman joins the club for the weekend series in West Sacramento, and Logan Porter will probably be sent back to Triple-A when that happens.

Toronto's move

For Toronto, the transaction cleared a player who is out of minor league options and had been overtaken on the depth chart. Heineman was used when Alejandro Kirk was out with a broken thumb, but Brandon Valenzuela stayed on the MLB roster as the backup when Kirk returned.

That stretch in Toronto included Heineman’s best offensive season last year, when he posted a career-best.289/.361/.416 slash line over 64 games. This season, he is hitting.154 with one home run in 87 plate appearances, a sharp drop at the plate but still a profile that fits as a receiving catcher with a good arm.

Roster squeeze in West Sacramento

The Angels are also taking on the remainder of Heineman’s $1.2375 million arbitration salary. If he holds his MLB job, he will remain eligible for arbitration for another two seasons, so this is not a one-night depth move; it is a roster decision that ties the club to a catcher who may need to stick to justify the carry.

West Sacramento now becomes the immediate test. Heineman is expected to join the Angels for that weekend series, while Porter appears headed out and the club continues to patch together catching depth around O'Hoppe and the injuries that forced this deal in the first place.
