Three sets of skeletal remains were found inside a Burlington foreclosure home on Sunday, after the property was sold at auction earlier this month. The discovery turned a routine transfer of a foreclosed house on Stanwich Lane into an active Connecticut State Police investigation.

The remains were found by the property's new owner, and investigators believe the three people may have been dead for several months. State police have not identified the remains, and they do not believe a crime was committed.

Stanwich Lane and the Cash property

The home was purchased in 2019 by Paul Cash and Sally Anne Cash for more than $800,000, according to town records. It is a four-bedroom house built in 2002 on more than two acres, a property that later moved through foreclosure and was sold at auction earlier this month.

That sequence leaves the new owner with a house that came with a far more serious problem than a title transfer. The home now sits at the center of a death investigation, while authorities work to identify the remains and determine how the three people died.

State police investigation

Doug Thompson, Burlington's first selectman, said, "I don't want to get into any type of speculation. Let the police do their investigation is all I can really say." Jaden Slipsky, a Burlington resident, said, "I think everyone's kind of in their life, trying to get through the day by day, but I would definitely be concerned about what's going on. But you would think their family would call."

The unresolved issue is the most basic one: who the three people were. Authorities have not said whether Paul Cash and Sally Anne Cash were among those found inside the residence, and the investigation remains ongoing as state police try to identify the deceased and sort out how they died.
