The Danville Lucky California store is set to permanently close on Friday, July 17, ending one of the most familiar grocery stops in Danville and adding to Lucky Supermarket California closures that have touched the Tri-Valley. Paper signs on the doors told shoppers they can use a nearby Lucky at 21001 San Ramon Valley Blvd. in San Ramon.
Phil Keene, senior director of communications, public relations and government affairs for The Save Mart Companies, said the closure was based on economic factors. He said the company regularly reviews every store against business standards and sometimes closes an underperforming location.

The signs at the Sycamore Square Shopping Center store gave the clearest timeline: “STORE CLOSURE. This store will permanently close on Friday, July 17th,” they read. They also directed shoppers to another Lucky store in San Ramon, giving regular customers a nearby option before the Danville site shuts for good.
The closure reaches beyond the storefront. Keene said the company will work to transfer team members to nearby locations, based on availability and seniority. That leaves employees with a path to other stores, even as the Danville location winds down.

The Danville store had served as an anchor tenant for multiple decades at 660 San Ramon Valley Blvd. It changed names over time: Lucky to Albertson’s in 1999 after a parent company acquisition, back to Lucky in 2007 after Save Mart bought the brand the year prior, and then to the Lucky California concept in 2019.
That long run now ends while the company says it is still expanding elsewhere. Keene said The Save Mart Companies recently broke ground on new stores in Manteca and Tulare, released plans for a new store in South Lake Tahoe, and completed several remodels, including in Ripon and Madera.

The Danville closure is the second Lucky California shutdown in the Tri-Valley in nearly three years, after the store in Fallon Gateway in Dublin shuttered in the fall of 2023. Lucky still operates stores in San Ramon, Pleasanton, and Livermore, so Danville shoppers who relied on the Sycamore Square location have a named nearby alternative and a short list of other options.
The practical question now is how many employees and customers will shift to those other stores before July 17. The signs point to the San Ramon location, and the company says team transfers will depend on availability and seniority.
