Matt Bomer set for Herod role in Jesus Christ Superstar West End run

Matt Bomer has been named as one of nine performers who will take turns playing King Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar when the production moves to Theatre Royal Drury Lane this autumn. His run is set for 16 to 31 October, making him the first announced Herod in the transfer’s opening stretch.

The casting gives the West End run a fixed opening rhythm. Sam Ryder will continue as Jesus for the second spell of Tim Sheader’s 2026 production, while the Herod role is being split across limited runs that start with Bomer, then move to Rob Brydon from 2 to 7 November, Reece Shearsmith from 9 to 14 November, Bob The Drag Queen from 16 to 21 November, Michael Ball from 23 November to 5 December, Simon Russell Beale from 7 to 12 December, Omid Djalili from 14 to 19 December and Layton Williams from 21 December 2026 to 2 January 2027.

That schedule matters because the production is not simply settling one role, it is selling an event around a rotating part. The show moves to Theatre Royal Drury Lane after its London Palladium season, following record-breaking demand for the summer run, and the autumn transfer is set to play for 12 weeks from October before ending on 9 January 2027.

There is still one gap in the plan. The production has announced nine performers for Herod, but one final Herod for the last week of performances has not yet been named. Layton Williams, who already played Herod for two weeks at The London Palladium in August, is back in the line-up, but the closing stretch remains unfinished.

For audiences, the calendar is now the story: Bomer opens the rotation, the other names follow in sequence, and the final week is still waiting for its last reveal. Once that last Herod is announced, the transfer’s full casting puzzle will finally be complete.
