Jonathan Toews retired from the NHL on Friday after 16 seasons, closing a career that stretched from Chicago to Winnipeg. He made the announcement at the Jonathan Toews Sportsplex in Winnipeg, the city where he grew up.
Toews leaves with 912 points in 1,149 games for the Blackhawks and Jets, plus 3 Stanley Cups, a Conn Smythe Trophy and a Selke Trophy. He also won gold with Canada at the Olympics in 2010 and 2014, a run that put him among the most decorated centers of his era.
Chicago Blackhawks and Jets
Chicago chose Toews with the No. 3 pick in the 2006 NHL Draft, then named him captain on Jul. 18, 2008, when he was 20 years and 79 days old. He became the third youngest captain in NHL history and formed a core with Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith that powered the Blackhawks to titles in 2010, 2013 and 2015.
His numbers for Chicago still sit near the top of the club record book. Toews ranks sixth in Blackhawks history with 372 goals and 883 points, fifth with 1,067 games played, eighth with 511 assists, second with 137 playoff games and fifth with 119 postseason points.
Winnipeg Sportsplex Return
Toews played his final NHL season in 2025-26 with the Jets, finishing with 29 points in 82 games. That line included 11 goals and 18 assists, a useful snapshot of what his comeback looked like after he had been away from the NHL for two years because of an illness.
He did get back to full seasons in 2025-26, but not to peak production. Toews was limited to 124 games over his final two seasons with the Blackhawks, missed the entire 2020-21 season because Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome kept him out, and then missed time from Feb. 21 to April 1, 2023, because he was dealing with the effects of long COVID-19.
Jonathan Toews Sportsplex in Winnipeg
The retirement announcement at the Jonathan Toews Sportsplex in Winnipeg matched the shape of the end of his career: home, familiar and final. What comes after this is the open part of the story, because the career itself is now closed after 16 NHL seasons, 3 Stanley Cups and 1,149 games.
