John Meredith III Commits to Texas After Five-Star Recruiting Race

John Meredith III committed to Texas on Friday, June 19, giving Texas a five-star cornerback after a recruiting race that also included Ohio State and Texas A&M. The decision came after he had already taken official visits to Texas and Texas A&M, and it adds another high-end defensive back to Texas' 2027 class.

John Meredith III and Texas

Meredith is a North Crowley cornerback from Fort Worth, and his profile had already made the decision one of the more important recruiting calls in the 2027 cycle. According to 247Sports, he is the No. 4 overall prospect in the class and the top defensive back. The updated Sports composite football rankings for 2027 place him at No. 2 nationally.

Texas did not land him by default. Meredith's choice came after he took an official visit to Texas on June 5 and another to Texas A&M the weekend prior. Those visits gave Texas a direct chance to close, and the result was a commitment that came down to Texas, Texas A&M and Ohio State.

North Crowley and eligibility

The commitment also arrives with a complication already attached to Meredith's high school future. He was recently ruled ineligible for his senior season on a 5-2 vote at an 11-6 district executive committee meeting after transferring to North Crowley from Euless Trinity in January.

That makes the next step for Meredith as important as the pledge itself. Texas now has the recruiting win, but his senior-season status still sits in the background while the school year and football calendar move forward.

Texas' 2027 class

Meredith gives Texas more weight in a 2027 class that was already sitting at No. 12 by 247Sports with 15 commitments before his decision. Five of those commitments ranked among the top 100 players in the cycle, and the addition of a No. 2 national prospect raises the ceiling of that group immediately.

The fit also connects to Easton Royal, who has been committed to Texas since last November. Texas was trying to keep both players in the fold, and Meredith's commitment strengthens that effort while giving the defense an anchor-level prospect before his senior-season situation is resolved.
