Elizabeth Line trains between Paddington and Heathrow were severely delayed on Monday morning, and there was no service to and from Terminal 5. For passengers heading into Heathrow Airport, the disruption hit the airport link at the start of the rush hour.
The problem sat alongside damaged overhead power cables affecting trains between central London and Heathrow. Heathrow Express was running a reduced operation, adding more pressure on rail journeys to the airport.
Paddington and Heathrow
The service gap was not limited to one train set or one platform. Trains between Paddington and Heathrow were badly disrupted, while the Terminal 5 branch had no service in either direction.
That left a split picture for travellers using Heathrow Airport. The airport rail link was not operating normally across the whole route, so journeys that rely on the Paddington and Heathrow connection faced delays even before reaching the terminal branches.
London Underground delays
The wider morning picture across London included several other lines affected at the same time. The Central line had severe delays because of a signal fault at Holborn, and the Overground’s Mildmay line was suspended after a fire alert at Camden Road.
Elsewhere, the Metropolitan line had severe delays between Wembley Park and Aldgate because of a track fault at Finchley Road. The Suffragette line had severe delays because of train cancellations, while the Victoria line had minor delays because of a track fault at Walthamstow.
Turnham Green and Richmond
Minor delays were also reported between Turnham Green and Richmond after an earlier fire alert. That meant the Monday morning network problems were not confined to one corridor, even though the Heathrow branch drew the clearest impact for airport passengers.
For anyone travelling to Heathrow on Monday morning, the practical step was to treat the Elizabeth Line and Heathrow rail services as disrupted rather than routine. The route to Terminal 5 had no service, and the reduced Heathrow Express operation left fewer rail options into the airport while the cables problem continued to affect trains.
