Ally McCoist has a new Rangers boss, and it is Derek McInnes on a three-year contract. The move ends Danny Röhl’s spell in charge after less than a year and resets the club’s direction after Rangers finished third last month, 10 points off the top.
McInnes said: "It is no secret that I grew up a Rangers supporter and I am convinced this is the right time to take on this prestigious role given the club’s structure and leadership." He also said: "The demands here are clear, and our supporters rightfully have high expectations. It is up to me, my staff and my players to meet those expectations."
Derek McInnes Returns To Ibrox
The appointment brings McInnes back to Rangers after he rejected the chance to take the job in 2017. He arrives from Hearts, where he had been leading the side to second place this season. That makes the move more than a routine hire: Rangers are bringing in a manager who knows the club from the inside and has already shown he can handle a league race.
McInnes had previously played for Rangers, so this is a return to familiar ground as well as a promotion into a job with a wider remit. The three-year deal also gives him a longer runway than the short-term reset that often follows a mid-season change.
Danny Röhl Leaves For RB Salzburg
Röhl left Rangers by mutual agreement and is heading to RB Salzburg. Rangers and RB Salzburg agreed a seven-figure compensation package, and Sascha Lense and Tristan Steiner will also depart Ibrox. Andrew Cavenagh said: "I’d like to thank Danny for his service and commitment to Rangers." He added: "He and his staff put in a significant amount of hard work during their time in charge, which we are greatly appreciative of."
Röhl had only replaced Russell Martin as head coach in October last year, so this latest switch closes a short spell in charge and hands McInnes a squad that has already moved through a fast cycle of change. For Rangers, the job now is to settle the staff, absorb the compensation deal, and push back from a third-place finish that left them 10 points off the top.
