Populous Unveils 70,000-Seat King Fahd Sports City Stadium for 2034 Fifa World Cup

Populous has unveiled plans to overhaul Riyadh’s King Fahd Sports City Stadium for the 2034 FIFA World Cup, lifting capacity to 70,000 seats and replacing the old roof with a 36,000-square-metre cable-net canopy. The project pushes a 1987 venue into a new phase while it remains part of Saudi Arabia’s wider stadium buildout.

Shireen Hamdan said the design moves the stadium into modern times while keeping sustainability central. “This project not only elevates a beloved venue into contemporary times but also prioritizes environmental consciousness.”

King Fahd Sports City Stadium Plan

The redesign goes beyond the roofline. Populous said the new canopy will be supported by structural masts and will replace the aging tent-like roof now associated with the stadium. The plan also calls for excavating 10 meters into the ground to create a lower tier seating area, a move that changes both the seating bowl and the way fans move through the venue.

That lower level is tied to more than matchday seating. The displaced soil will be turned into landscapes and training grounds around the stadium, while the wider proposal includes a sports center, amphitheater, football pitches, and retail shops inside the park. For spectators and regular users, the stadium is being reworked as a full precinct, not just a single venue.

Riyadh And Saudi Arabia

The cooling plan is one of the more practical parts of the redesign. Deployable terrace covers are meant to reflect sunlight and, by the project’s own description, reduce the temperature of concrete seating by up to eight degrees Celsius. That is a concrete operating detail, not a design flourish, because it speaks to how the venue is expected to perform during the World Cup buildout.

King Fahd Sports City Stadium is one of 15 stadiums being constructed or renovated across Saudi Arabia for the 2034 FIFA World Cup. That makes this project one piece of a much larger program, with Riyadh getting a major venue refresh while King Salman International Stadium is set to host the World Cup final.

Worker Safety Questions

The redesign is being sold as sustainable and modern, but past reports also raised worker safety issues and drew criticism from human rights organizations. That leaves the stadium plan carrying two images at once: a high-spec showcase for the 2034 FIFA World Cup, and a project moving forward under scrutiny over how such work is carried out.

For readers tracking the buildout, the immediate takeaway is simple: the stadium is not being replaced, it is being transformed. The work now has to deliver a 70,000-seat venue with a canopy, cooling features, and new surrounding facilities while Saudi Arabia continues its 15-stadium program ahead of the tournament.
