Yann Diomande Stands Out in Ivory Coast's 1-0 Win Over Ecuador

Yann Diomande made his World Cup debut and looked like the sharpest player on the pitch as Ivory Coast beat Ecuador 1-0. The 19-year-old winger kept forcing the issue for Ivory Coast and left Ecuador chasing him for long stretches.

He took more touches, attempted more take-ons and created more chances than any of his Ivory Coast team-mates. In one move, he drifted inside and used a two-tap pass to thread the ball through to Elye Wahi; later, he picked out Nicolas Pepe for a shot.

Yan Diomande and Piero Hincapie

Piero Hincapie saw plenty of him in the opening half. Alan Minda helped Hincapie try to cut off Diomande’s runs down the flank, but Ivory Coast kept finding ways to put him on the ball. A Guela Doue run also opened space for him to float inside on one attack.

The scale of the rise is the part that gives this debut more weight. Barely 18 months before the World Cup game, Diomande was at DME Sports Academy in Florida, and around a year before the match RB Leipzig had committed €20million for his services. He ended the 2024-25 campaign with just 500 minutes for Leganes, a small workload next to the fee attached to him.

RB Leipzig and Liverpool

That gap between minutes and valuation explains why this performance will be watched closely. The Athletic has reported that Liverpool have expressed interest in Diomande, and his first World Cup game adds another data point for clubs looking at a winger who already has dribbling, acceleration, balance and the habit of running at defenders.

Whether Liverpool or any other club acts before the summer is out is the unanswered part. For now, Ivory Coast have a 1-0 win and Diomande has a debut that turned him from a name on a list into a player difficult to ignore.
