Thomas Müller urged Bayern Munich to consider Johan Manzambi after the 20-year-old Freiburg midfielder scored twice for Switzerland in a 4-1 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Thursday. The timing sharpened the transfer talk around a player already drawing attention from several major clubs.
Manzambi strikes twice
Manzambi opened the scoring in the 74th minute and finished his brace in the 90th. Switzerland had trailed in a match that looked set to finish scoreless, then turned it into a 4-1 win.
That sequence gave Müller a fresh case for Bayern Munich. Speaking on Magenta TV, he said: “He’s a good player overall,” and added, “We’ve had him on our list for a while now. For me, he’s someone - and you can now write your headlines - that FC Bayern should consider.”
Müller’s Bayern case
He also pointed to the parts of Manzambi’s game that translate across roles. “You can sense his flexibility. You can also sense his carefree attitude. At the same time, you can already see a certain maturity in his actions, in his decision-making, his work ethic,” Müller said.
“He’s now in Freiburg in a team where they really work hard. I think his development is very, very good. He’s a player who can play as No.6, he can play as No.8, he can play as No.10. He wears number nine on his back, so maybe we could also market him as a striker!”
SciSports sees a mismatch
SciSports takes a different view of the fit. It said Bayern Munich is not believed to suit Manzambi stylistically or in terms of playing time, and that he could struggle for minutes behind Jamal Musiala.
That puts Bayern’s public endorsement and the data firm’s view on opposite sides of the same move. SciSports placed AS Roma and Juventus among the strongest stylistic fits, with Newcastle, Chelsea and Tottenham also ranking well. Napoli, Arsenal and Man Utd also came out as possible options.
Manzambi’s boost in visibility is clear. He is now a 20-year-old Freiburg midfielder who has scored seven goals and provided nine assists in his breakout Bundesliga campaign, and the next step will be whether any of the clubs linked to him turn admiration into action.
