Tottenham Hotspur have stepped up their pursuit of Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton. The move puts the 21-year-old England international back at the centre of a crowded midfield market, with Liverpool and Manchester United also monitoring him closely.
Wharton at the centre
Over the past 12 months, Wharton has been one of the most talked-about midfielders in the Premier League. Tottenham are now prepared to make a serious push, and the attention around him has only increased as they look to add more control in the middle of the pitch.
Liverpool remain among his strongest admirers and have held talks with his camp in recent weeks. Manchester United have also kept a long-standing appreciation of him and continue to monitor his situation closely. That gives Wharton a line of interest that stretches well beyond one club’s recruitment plan.
Tottenham midfield plans
Tottenham are actively exploring a number of midfield additions after the departure of Yves Bissouma. Before the close of the window, they are open to bringing in as many as three new midfielders, and Joao Palhinha is already in discussions with the club.
Palhinha still has an option to turn his loan move into a permanent deal, while he is also in talks with Sporting CP and other clubs over a possible return to Portugal. Tottenham have also made enquiries about Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, two more names on their internal list.
Crystal Palace hold firm
Crystal Palace say they have yet to receive any formal approach from a rival club and continue to maintain they are under no pressure to sell. They have also not entered discussions with any interested club, which keeps Wharton’s situation in the stage where interest is real but nothing has moved into a formal bid.
That leaves Tottenham with a clear target and Crystal Palace with the leverage. Wharton’s profile fits the kind of midfield addition Tottenham want, but any move still depends on whether they turn pursuit into an approach that Palace are willing to engage with.
