Boris and Jenkins found together outside Indiana shelter — Dumped Pets Outside Shelters

Boris and Jenkins were found among dumped pets outside shelters at the Humane Society for Hamilton County in Indiana. Staff discovered the 6-month-old puppy and 2-year-old cat one morning, and Boris had rested a paw over Jenkins while they waited to be rescued.

On June 3, the shelter shared the image on its Instagram account, @hamiltonhumane. The caption said the pair had been left in the parking lot as temperatures climbed into the upper 80s, with little protection from the elements.

The shelter brought both animals inside so they could recover from the ordeal. Boris later found a forever home, and the shelter later said both Boris and Jenkins had found forever homes.

The timing made the rescue more urgent. The AAHA says pets can develop heat stroke within minutes when their body temperature rises above 104 degrees Fahrenheit, and it lists excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting and difficulty walking as early signs.

Puppies and kittens are especially vulnerable because they have not yet fully developed the ability to regulate body temperature. Boris was 6 months old, and Jenkins was 2 years old, leaving both exposed for hours before staff arrived.

The shelter described the pair as lucky, but staff also said they had been left in a parking lot with little protection as temperatures rose. That left a simple question hanging over the image of Boris shielding Jenkins: why were they abandoned together in the first place?
