Anthony Davis has a strong interest in being part of what the Wizards are building, and Michael Winger said that feeling has come through in their conversations this week. That comes after Davis said after the trade that he had questions about the team’s path to contention.

Michael Winger on Anthony Davis

“My conversations with AD are delightful. He’s a pro’s pro. He understands who he is in this league, he understands the direction of this league, he understands what we’re trying to do organizationally,” Winger said this week in a conversation with JP Finlay of NBC Sports.

Winger added that Davis “has communicated to me a strong interest in being part of what we’re building… He, like the rest of us, wants to be on a really good basketball team and compete for something big. That’s our aim, that’s what we want to do, and I’m delighted that Anthony’s here for that.”

Wizards roster context

The comments land in a season where the Wizards have struggled to find their direction for several years. Washington now has Davis, Trae Young, the No. 1 pick, and a roster full of intriguing young talent, which gives the front office more than one path to shape.

In February, Washington acquired Davis in a three-team trade, and that move quickly turned his future into a point of speculation. His own questions about contention left room for doubt, but Winger’s remarks suggest the organization still sees a fit if Davis stays aligned with the broader plan.

The practical takeaway for the Wizards is simple: the team’s timeline now depends less on whether Davis can be included and more on whether the rest of the roster keeps pace with what he says he wants. If the young pieces develop and the group moves faster than expected, Washington could trend in the right direction quickly.

For now, Davis is still in the middle of that equation. Winger’s comments point to interest, but not to a formal decision, and the next step rests on how Anthony Davis and the Wizards keep building from here.
