Tottenham Hotspur have opened club-to-club talks with Newcastle United over Sandro Tonali, moving the Michael Carrick Man United targets chase from interest into direct negotiation. The move puts a major midfield deal on the table, with Newcastle now facing a decision on one of their most valuable players.
Tonali Talks Move Forward
Tonali is 26 and has drawn attention from Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City if he leaves St James’ Park. Discussions between his representatives and both suitors are continuing, so the deal has already moved beyond a simple scouting exercise.
That matters because the price is high. Newcastle United will seek about £100million to consider selling him, while his contract runs until 2029 and includes a 12-month extension option. Tottenham would have to meet that figure before the conversation becomes a serious sale attempt.
Newcastle United Set The Price
Tonali made 53 appearances for Newcastle United in all competitions last season, scored three times, and helped them finish 12th in the Premier League and reach the last-16 of the Champions League. He has also become a regular midfield partner for Bruno Guimaraes, which gives Newcastle a reason to resist a quick exit.
Since returning in August 2024, Tonali has made 110 appearances for Newcastle United and has scored 10 goals and provided 10 assists. That output came after the 10-month suspension he received in October 2023, when he was ruled out for the rest of the season and Italy’s 2024 European Championship campaign.
Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes
Tonali moved to St James’ Park from Milan in July 2023 for a fee in the region of £60.5m, having joined Milan initially on loan in 2020 before signing permanently a year later. He was born 19 miles south of Milan in Lodi and came through the youth set up at Brescia.
Whether Tottenham Hotspur will meet Newcastle United’s £100million valuation is the issue that now drives the story. If they do not, the talks stay exactly where they are: advanced enough to matter, but not yet enough to force Newcastle into a sale.
