Gustavo Puerta beats Richard Rios to start in Colombia win

Gustavo Puerta beat Richard Ríos to Colombia's starting XI and finished the opening World Cup match against Uzbekistan with an assist for Luís Díaz. The move pushed Ríos, a consolidated name in the team, out of the lineup and gave Puerta a first-start role in the tournament.

Puerta seizes the XI

Puerta is 22 years old and was the youngest player on Colombia's team. He used the start to show what had opened the door for him in the final preparation: strong marking, speed to fill spaces and intensity without the ball.

That profile fit the match. He did not need a long touch map to matter. He helped Colombia progress through midfield and ended the game with the final pass that set up Luís Díaz, a direct return from a player who had gone from bench option to starter in the space of a few sessions.

Richard Ríos in the background

Ríos was not pushed aside by surprise. He said he likes how Puerta plays and called the competition healthy, adding: "Eu já disse que adoro como esse garoto joga, porque a camisa não pesa para ele. Acho excelente o que está acontecendo, porque ele merece, além de ter conquistado isso na raça. Eu disse muitas coisas para ele antes do jogo, conversamos muito, temos conversado todos esses dias e isso é bom porque é uma disputa saudável. Sinto que ajuda tanto a ele quanto a mim".

That competition had already tilted before the opener. Puerta earned starts in the two last friendlies and displaced Ríos in the final stretch, a reversal that says more about the pecking order than about one isolated match. For a midfielder who had once been considered short for his age and above weight in youth football, the starting role in a World Cup opener was the sharpest sign of where he stands now.

On Tuesday at 23h

Puerta was expected to start again against the Democratic Republic of Congo on Tuesday at 23h Brasília time. A win there would guarantee Colombia's qualification, so the next lineup choice is already tied to more than one player’s status.

For Ríos, the issue now is simple: he is no longer the automatic first name in that part of the field. For Puerta, the question is whether the opener was a one-night switch or the start of a longer run in Colombia's midfield.
