Coby White is drawing offseason interest from the Los Angeles Lakers while the Charlotte Hornets still want to keep him. Marc Stein reported that there is a growing perception around the league that White could be “gettable,” and that puts a real deadline on Charlotte’s decision-making before June 30.
White’s 21-game run
White, 26, has a case built on production. In 21 games for the Hornets after being acquired from the Chicago Bulls ahead of last season’s trade deadline, he averaged 15.6 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists while shooting 39.1% from three-point range.
He also delivered one of Charlotte’s sharpest late-game shots of the spring, hitting a clutch three-pointer that forced overtime against the Miami Heat in the Play-In Tournament. That mix of shot creation and perimeter scoring is the part that travels, and it is why Los Angeles has him on the board as a possible fit next to Luka Doncic.
Hornets leverage and Lakers space
The Lakers are not looking at White in a vacuum. They are also trying to retain Marcus Smart and Luke Kennard, while Austin Reaves carries a $20.9 million cap hold. Dave McMenamin reported that Los Angeles could preserve nearly $50 million in cap space before re-signing Reaves, which gives the front office multiple ways to build the backcourt.
Charlotte still has a path to keep him. The Hornets inherited White’s Bird rights in the trade, which allows them to go over the salary cap to re-sign him, and Bobby Marks said White is eligible for a three-year, $52.4 million extension with Charlotte before June 30. He previously signed a three-year, $36 million deal with the Chicago Bulls, so this offseason sits at the point where the Hornets can either buy certainty or test whether the market clears higher.
The practical issue is simple: Los Angeles can line up interest, but Charlotte controls the extension window. If the Hornets want White to stay put, they have the mechanism to pay him without cap room; if not, the “gettable” label could move him into the same pool as other unrestricted targets.
