Germany’s place at the top of the Germany World Cup table is settled. They have already clinched Group E after beating Ivory Coast and Curacao, leaving Curacao, Ivory Coast and Ecuador to sort out the remaining knockout spots in the final round.
Room kept Curacao alive
Curacao stayed in the race by drawing 0-0 with Ecuador, and Eloy Room was central to that result with 15 saves. That display came after Curacao’s 7-1 loss to Germany, a margin that would have ended the conversation for many teams. Instead, the point kept Dick Advocaat’s side within reach of qualification.
The equation is simple for Curacao now. A victory against Ivory Coast is enough to qualify regardless of results elsewhere, while a draw would not be good enough. For a team that already absorbed a heavy defeat to Germany, the route back is narrow but still open.
Ivory Coast and Ecuador pressure
Ivory Coast can settle the group race by avoiding defeat to Curacao. If they do that, they finish as runners-up no matter what happens when Ecuador face Germany. If Ivory Coast lose and Ecuador beat Germany, Ivory Coast go out.
Ecuador face a sharper task. A win against Germany is a must for them. A draw would leave them on two points, and that would not be enough to go through in third place. If Ecuador fail to win and Ivory Coast lose to Curacao, Ivory Coast could still advance as one of the best third-placed sides, with the top eight third-place finishers decided after the group stage.
Head-to-head rules in Group E
If teams finish level on points, Group E is decided by head-to-head record against the nation they are tied with. If more than two teams finish level, a mini-league is created by removing results against the remaining teams. If teams are still level after that, the higher Fifa ranking in June’s published update will decide who goes through.
Germany enter their final match with the group already wrapped up, while Curacao, Ivory Coast and Ecuador are left to play for the places that still matter. Curacao’s hopes remain alive despite the 7-1 defeat to Germany, and that is the pressure point heading into the last fixtures.
