Tynan Lawrence Surfaces as a 6th-Overall Option for Calgary Flames

Tynan Lawrence has moved into the conversation for the Calgary Flames at 6th overall in the NHL draft. He was once projected at fourth overall, with some top-three support early in the year, but an injury and a midseason move changed the route.

That shift did not erase the upside. Lawrence still looks like a top-10 name, and the reason he is back in focus is simple: if the first five picks break a certain way, Calgary could be staring at a player who was considered much higher earlier in the season.

Muskegon Lumberjacks to Boston University

The numbers from his best junior stretch explain why he stayed in the upper tier of the class. Lawrence posted 25 goals and 54 points in 56 games with the Muskegon Lumberjacks the prior season, then returned from injury and scored 10 goals with 17 points in 13 games.

His season changed quickly after that. About halfway through the year, he decided to commit to Boston University a year earlier and left the Lumberjacks, a move that shifted his evaluation from junior production to an adjustment period at the college level.

Boston University Adjustment

Lawrence did not get on the statsheet until about his 8th game at Boston University. He finished with seven points in the final games of his season, enough to keep him in the top-10 range while leaving less certainty about where he fits inside the first few picks.

The fit issue is what opens the door for Calgary. Lawrence is described as strong at both ends of the ice, dangerous off the rush, a strong passer, and relentless on the forecheck, so his case is built on a complete profile rather than a single scoring spike.

Calgary Flames at 6th

For the Calgary Flames, the choice at 6th overall will come down to how the top five unfold. If Lawrence is still there, the club would be weighing a prospect whose stock dipped during the year but whose earlier projection still pointed much higher than the middle of the opening round.

Whether the Calgary Flames actually take him is the unresolved part. What is clear is that Lawrence’s path now runs through the first five picks, and his rise or slide from there will be judged against the injuries, the move to Boston University, and the production he still posted before and after that shift.
